THIS ARTICLE REPORTS THE FINDINGS OF AN INVESTIGATION OF 12 PSYCHOPATHIC PATIENTS WITH CHROMOSOME ABERRATIONS, WHO WERE FOUND AMONG 480 PERSONS IN 2 DANISH INSTITUTIONS FOR CRIMINAL PSYCHOPATHS.
Abstract
DETAILED CRIMINO-BIOLOGIC INVESTIGATIONS OF INDIVIDUALS WITH THE XYY SYNDROME AND KLINEFELTER'S SYNDROME WERE PROMPTED BY THE RESULTS IN PREVIOUS CYTOGENETIC AND BEHAVIORAL STUDIES. THE SUBJECTS FOR THE CRIMINO-BIOLOGIC STUDY WERE SELECTED BY A PREVALENCE AND INCIDENCE SURVEY, AND CHROMOSOME EXAMINATIONS WERE CONDUCTED FOR 480 PATIENTS FROM DANISH INSTITUTIONS FOR CRIMINAL PSYCHOPATHS IN 1967. TWELVE PATIENTS FOUND TO HAVE CHROMOSOME ABERRATIONS WERE CRIMINO-BIOLOGICALLY INVESTIGATED. THE INCIDENCE OF 2.5 PERCENT OF THE PATIENT POPULATION POSSESSING A CHROMOSOME ABERRATION WAS SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER THAN FOR THE GENERAL POPULATION. OF THE PATIENTS INVESTIGATED, FIVE HAD KLINEFELTER'S SYNDROME, FIVE HAD THE XYY KARYOTYPE, ONE HAD THE 46,XY/47,XY,?XQ-MOSAIC, AND THE OTHER HAD THE 46,?XP-Y CHARACTERISTIC. CASE HISTORIES OF EACH PATIENT PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THEIR CHROMOSOME CONSTITUTION, CRIMINAL RECORD, FAMILY BACKGROUND, AND CLINICAL PSYCHIATRIC DIAGNOSIS. RECIDIVISM HAD OCCURRED WITH 10 OF THE 12 PATIENTS, AND THE MEAN NUMBER OF SENTENCES WAS 7.0. THE RESULTS ALSO INDICATE THAT EARLY STARTING CRIMINALS HAVE A RECIDIVISTIC TENDENCY. THE FREQUENCY OF PROPERTY CRIMES WAS FOUND TO BE HIGHER AND THAT OF VIOLENT CRIMES LOWER THAN FOR ALL MALE CRIMINALS. FURTHER DISCUSSION OF THE RESULTS INCLUDES THE PSYCHIATRIC DIAGNOSIS OF THE PATIENTS, WHICH INDICATED THAT ALL WERE PSYCHOINFANTILE. TABULAR DATA AND REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED. (TWK)
