AN INVENTORY OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POPULATION OF THE MCCABE JUVENILE DIAGNOSTIC CENTER IN R.I. FOR THOSE PERSONS WHOSE DETENTION OCCURRED DURING CALENDAR YEAR 1978 IS PRESENTED IN TABULAR FORM.
Abstract
A TOTAL OF 185 PERSONS WERE RESIDENTS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CENTER DURING 1978. THERE WERE 171 ADMISSIONS AND 171 RELEASES DURING THE YEAR; 13 ELOPEMENTS ALSO OCCURRED. ELEVEN VARIABLES ARE CONSIDERED IN THIS REPORT INCLUDING SEX, RACE, AGE, LENGTH OF DETENTION, TYPE OF OFFENSE, CENSUS TRACT OF RESIDENT, RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CENTER PERSONNEL, NUMBER OF PREVIOUS FAMILY COURT APPEARANCES, CHILD WELFARE SERVICE INTERVENTION PRIOR TO COMMITMENT, ADJUDICATIVE STATUS, AND OUT-OF-HOME PLACEMENTS. DURING 1978, 130 MALES AND 55 FEMALES WERE ADMITTED; THE MAJORITY OF DETAINEES WERE WHITE. AGE OF COMMITMENT RANGED FROM 9 TO 18. LENGTH OF DETENTION RANGED FROM 5 TO 126 DAYS WITH MOST BEING BETWEEN 26 AND 50 DAYS. DETAINEES COMMITTED 29 CATEGORIES OF OFFENSES. RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CENTER STAFF CONCERNED WHERE THE CHILD SHOULD RESIDE UPON RELEASE, AND WHICH AGENCIES, (I.E., CHILD WELFARE SERVICES, YOUTH SERVICES, PROBATION), THE CHILD SHOULD UTILIZE. SIXTY-TWO PERCENT OF THE DETAINEES WERE CHILD WELFARE CASES PRIOR TO ADMISSION; A HIGH PERCENTAGE HAD EXPERIENCED AT LEAST ONE PLACEMENT OUTSIDE OF THE HOME. TABLES REFLECTING ADJUDICATE STATUS ARE DIVIDED INTO THREE CATEGORIES INCLUDING ADJUDICATED DELINQUENT, ADJUDICATED WAYWARD, AND NOT ADJUDICATED. APPROXIMATELY 61 PERCENT OF THE DETAINEES WERE NOT ADJUDICATED PRIOR TO ADMISSION. TABULAR DATA ARE INCLUDED. (LWM)
