ADVANCED TRAINING MATERIALS FOR PROSECUTORS WHO HANDLE MAJOR FELONY CASES IN THE SUPERIOR COURT DIVISION OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA UNITED STATES ATTORNEY'S OFFICE ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE MATERIALS ARE PART OF A COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING PROGRAM, WHICH ALSO INCLUDES COMPONENTS FOR NEW PROSECUTORS (SEE NCJ-57314), MANAGEMENT AND SUPERVISORY PERSONNEL, AND SECRETARIAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE PERSONNEL. THE PROGRAM IS BASED ON A DETAILED ANALYSIS OF THE DIVISION'S TRAINING NEEDS. THE ADVANCED PROSECUTOR TRAINING MATERIALS CONSIST OF DISCUSSION OUTLINES TO BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH SEMINARS FOR GROUPS OF 12 TO 15 PROSECUTORS. THE MATERIALS IN SECTION 1 DEAL WITH THE PROSECUTOR'S ETHICAL RESPONSIBILITIES; USE OF THE GRAND JURY; RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE GRAND JURY/INTAKE SECTION; TACTICS IN EXCLUSIONARY HEARINGS (CONFESSIONS, SEARCH AND SEIZURE, IDENTIFICATION); THE LAW OF CONSPIRACY; AND ELECTRONIC SURVEILLANCE. TOPICS IN SECTION 2 DEAL WITH TRIAL SKILLS (INTERVIEWING AND PREPARING WITNESSES, PREPARING AND EXAMINING EXPERT WITNESSES, SERVICES AND FUNCTIONS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN CRIMINAL CASES, OPENING STATEMENTS AND CLOSING ARGUMENTS, DIRECT AND REDIRECT EXAMINATION, CROSS-EXAMINATION, THE HEARSAY RULE, AND THE INSANITY DEFENSE).
