THE SWEDISH CRIME PREVENTION COUNCIL WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1974 AS A BRANCH OF THE MINISTRY OF JUSTICE. WITH NO REAL AUTHORITY OVER OTHER GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, THE COUNCIL'S PURPOSE IS TO ADVISE AND COORDINATE.
Abstract
IN THE INTEREST OF CRIME PREVENTION, THE COUNCIL MONITORS AND ANALYZES TRENDS IN CRIME AND DOES PROGNOSES OF CRIME TRENDS FOR THE FUTURE; FOLLOWS, SUPPORTS, AND INITIATES RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE AREA OF CRIME CAUSE IDENTIFICATION AND PREVENTION (AND DISSEMINATES RESULTS OF SUCH RESEARCH); AND WORKS FOR THE COORDINATION OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS IN THE CRIMINAL POLICY AREA. FURTHER DUTIES ARE TO INITIATE AND ENCOURAGE COOPERATIVE WORK AMONG CRIMINAL JUSTICE AGENCIES. THE CRIME PREVENTION COUNCIL HAS A PERMANENT STAFF MADE UP OF REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE PARLIAMENT AND CABINET, EXPERTS IN CRIMINOLOGY, MEMBERS OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT, LABOR UNION REPRESENTATIVES, AND REPRESENTATIVES OF OTHER GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS. SPECIAL AND EXPERT WORKING GROUPS ARE TEMPORARY CONTRIBUTORS TO THE COUNCIL, WHICH, DURING 1978 AND 1979, OPERATED UNDER A BUDGET OF ABOUT 7 MILLION CROWNS. A NUMBER OF TOPICS RECEIVING THE COUNCIL'S SPECIAL ATTENTION INCLUDE JUVENILE DELINQUENCY CAUSES AND PREVENTION, PUBLIC EDUCATION IN THE LAW, ALTERNATIVES TO INSTITUTIONALIZATION AND EX-OFFENDERS' RESOCIALIZATION, CITIZEN CRIME PREVENTION, AND THE ROLE OF SCHOOLS IN REINFORCING SOCIAL CONTROLS AND COOPERATING WITH POLICE IN DELINQUENCY PREVENTION. A LIST OF THE COUNCIL'S PUBLICATIONS IN ENGLISH, A PARTICIPANT'S ROSTER, AND A LIST OF COUNCIL REPORTS IN SWEDISH ARE PROVIDED. --IN SWEDISH. (DAG)
