THE STRUCTURED LEARNING TRAINING (SLT) TECHNIQUE FOR TRAINING POLICE TO WORK WITH THE ELDERLY REQUIRES ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT AND THE USE OF SIMULATION BY CLASSROOM PRACTICE AND ROLEPLAYING.
Abstract
SPECIFIC PROCEDURES SHOULD BE FOLLOWED BY THOSE INVOLVED IN TRAINING POLICE OFFICERS FOR EFFECTIVE WORK WITH ELDERLY CITIZENS. SLT CONSISTS OF THE FOUR PROCEDURES OF MODELING, ROLE PLAYING, SOCIAL REINFORCEMENT OR OTHER CORRECTIVE FEEDBACK, AND TRANSFER TRAINING. IN EACH TRAINING SESSION, WHICH TYPICALLY INVOLVES TWO TRAINERS AND EIGHT TO TWELVE TRAINEES, THE TRAINEES ARE SHOWN A BRIEF VIDEOTAPE OR LIVE REENACTMENT OF THE SPECIFIC SKILLS NEEDED IN WORKING WITH THE ELDERLY. THE TRAINEES ARE THEN GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRACTICE THESE TECHNIQUES IN THE CLASSROOM; THEY ARE PROVIDED WITH CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK ON THEIR USE OF THE TECHNIQUES AND ARE TAUGHT WAYS IN WHICH THESE CLASSROOM TECHNIQUES CAN BECOME AN EFFECTIVE PART OF THEIR DAILY WORK. THE GROUP LEADERSHIP SKILLS, INTERPERSONAL SENSITIVITY, AND ENTHUSIASM OF THE TWO TRAINERS ARE CRUCIAL FACTORS IN SUCCESSFUL TRAINING. THEY SHOULD ALSO POSSESS EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE OF POLICE PROCEDURE AND WORKING WITH THE ELDERLY. THE TRAINING ROOM SHOULD REFLECT THE TYPE OF SITUATIONS WHICH POLICE MOST OFTEN ENCOUNTER IN WORKING WITH THE ELDERLY. THE TYPES OF TRAINEE RESISTANCE AND METHODS FOR REDUCING THIS RESISTANCE ARE PRESENTED IN TABULAR FORM. (KCP)
