THIS ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE JACKSON COUNTY YOUTH COURT (MISSISSIPPI) FOR FISCAL YEAR 1977-78 DESCRIBES THE COURT'S CASELOAD, PROGRAMS, AND ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR.
Abstract
JACKSON COUNTY HAS A POPULATION OF 120,000. THE COURT ADMINISTRATOR REPORTED PROGRESS IN THREE AREAS IN WHICH PROBLEMS HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN REPORTED: FUNDING, INTERNAL ORGANIZATION, AND PREVENTION AND DIVERSION PROGRAMS. THE COURT PSYCHOLOGIST AND EXTERNS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI PROVIDED CLINICAL SERVICES FOR YOUTH AND THEIR FAMILIES. IN THE COURT, OVER 2,000 HEARINGS WERE HELD; 248 JUVENILES WERE DETERMINED TO BE DELINQUENT. THERE WERE 828 REFERRALS TO THE SHELTER COORDINATOR FOR CASES OF ABUSE OR NEGLECT. THE FUNCTIONS OF THE FOLLOWING SERVICE UNITS ARE ALSO DESCRIBED: INTAKE DEPARTMENT FOR STATUS OFFENDERS, DETENTION CENTER, EMERGENCY SHELTER, PROBATION AND PAROLE, VOLUNTEER SERVICES, THE OUTREACH COUNSELOR, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, AND COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND ORGANIZATIONS. A LIST OF CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP, AN EXPENDITURE SUMMARY, INFORMATION ON RESTITUTION PROGRAM PARTICIPATION, DETENTION CENTER AND SHELTER OCCUPANCY STATISTICS GROUPED BY RACE AND SEX, AND NUMEROUS PHOTOGRAPHS OF COURT STAFF AND FACILITIES, ARE INCLUDED.
