THIS FOURTH VOLUME IN THE GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE PRISON INDUSTRIES SERIES IS A BASIC MANUAL THAT PRESENTS FUNDAMENTAL ENGINEERING CONCEPTS AND PROCEDURES FOR USE IN THE PRISON INDUSTRY.
Abstract
THE MATERIAL BEGINS WITH DEFINITIONS OF THESE IMPORTANT CONCEPTS: MANUFACTURING; CONTINUOUS MANUFACTURE AND MASS PRODUCTION; INTERMITTENT MANUFACTURE AND JOB-LOT PRODUCTION; MIXED MANUFACTURE. THEN AN OUTLINE IS PRESENTED OF HOW MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES ARE GENERALLY ORGANIZED. FOCUS IS ON THE INDUSTRY PRODUCTION UNIT AND THE MAJOR FUNCTIONAL COMPONENTS OF SUCH PRODUCTION AREAS AS PRODUCTION PLANNING AND CONTROL, PLANT ENGINEERING, AND MANUFACTURING. THE FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF EACH OF THESE AREAS ARE DELINEATED. WHILE THE MANUAL DEFINES AND DESCRIBES BASIC CONCEPTS, STEP-BY-STEP WORKING EXAMPLES ALSO ARE GIVEN AND BLANK SAMPLE FORMS PROVIDED. WHENEVER POSSIBLE, EXAMPLES OF SYSTEMS, PLANT LAYOUTS, OR TOOLING ARE TAKEN FROM ACTUAL SITUATIONS IN PRISON INDUSTRIES. SINCE THE EMPHASIS IS ON IMPROVING PRODUCTION ACTIVITIES IN PRISON INDUSTRIES, HIGHLY SOPHISTICATED INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING CONCEPTS AND TECHNIQUES ARE OMITTED OR GIVEN BRIEF MENTION ONLY. THE ULTIMATE PURPOSE OF THE VOLUME IS TO PROVIDE INDIVIDUALS OPERATING PRISON INDUSTRIES WITH THE ABILITY TO PLAN AND DESIGN NEW INDUSTRIES AND MAXIMIZE THE POTENTIAL FOR HIGH-LEVEL, EFFICIENT PRODUCTION, MODIFY EXISTING INDUSTRIES TO INCREASE PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY, CUT LABOR/PROCESSING COSTS, REDUCE WASTE/SCRAP LEVELS, AND, IN GENERAL, MAKE INDUSTRIES MORE COST EFFECTIVE. EXTENSIVE TABULAR DATA ARE INCLUDED. FOR OTHER VOLUMES IN THIS SERIES SEE NCJ 60756-9, NCJ 60761-2, AND NCJ 87053.
