THE EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES OF PSYCHOLOGY CURRICULA TO BE USED FOR TRAINING OF CORRECTIONAL STAFF IN TREATMENT-ORIENTED PRISONS ARE DISCUSSED.

Abstract

TRAINING IN PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIAL SCIENCES IS NECESSARY FOR CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS BECAUSE THEIR EDUCATIONAL LEVEL AND SOCIAL STATUS ARE RELATIVELY LOW AND BECAUSE NEW DEFINITIONS OF PROFESSIONAL GOALS FOR CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS, I.E., ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT IN PRISONER TREATMENT, REQUIRE PSYCHOLOGICAL COMPETENCE. THE PRINCIPAL EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES ARE (1) TO TRAIN CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS IN APPLICATION OF BEHAVIORAL MODIFICATION AND CLIENT-ORIENTED METHODS TO PRISONER TREATMENT AND IN TECHNIQUES OF EXPOSING OFFENDERS TO NEW EXPERIENCES AND (2) TO CHANGE THE OFFICERS' PERCEPTIONS OF THEMSELVES. BASIC CURRICULUM CONTENTS RELATE TO DIAGNOSTIC METHODS, DELINQUENCY THEORY, AND PRINCIPLES OF BEHAVIORAL MODIFICATION. TEACHING METHODS SHOULD FOLLOW THE PRINCIPLES OF ADULT EDUCATION; I.E., AN APPROPRIATE LEVEL OF SPEECH, ALTERNATION OF THEORY AND PRACTICE, AND CONCRETE REPRESENTATION OF MATERIAL. SPECIFIC STEP-BY-STEP METHODS INCLUDE LECTURES AND HANDOUT MATERIALS TO PROMOTE RECOGNITION, DEMONSTRATIONS WITH FILMS AND RECORDINGS OR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES TO ELICIT UNDERSTANDING, AND GROUP TECHNIQUES SUCH AS MODELING AND ROLE PLAYING TO ACHIEVE APPLICATION. EVALUATION OF WHETHER EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES ARE ACHIEVED IN EACH STEP OF THE TRAINING MODEL IS RECOMMENDED. A BIBLIOGRAPHY IS FURNISHED. --IN GERMAN. (KMD)
