FOUR LITERATURE REVIEWS ON ECONOMIC MODELS OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR ARE PRESENTED ALONG WITH FOUR EMPIRICAL STUDIES LINKING ECONOMETRIC METHODS TO FORMAL NEOCLASSICAL ECONOMIC THEORY.
Abstract
INCREASINGLY SOPHISTICATED ECONOMIC MODELS OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR HAVE BEEN FORMULATED AND ESTIMATED IN THE 10 YEARS SINCE BECKER'S SEMINAL CONTRIBUTION TO THIS FIELD. THEREFORE, PART OF THIS VOLUME IS DEVOTED TO A REVIEW AND CRITIQUE OF THE LITERATURE AND THE REMAINDER, TO NEW EMPIRICAL STUDIES. THE BOOK REVIEWS THE THEORETICAL ECONOMIC MODELS OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR THAT HAVE APPEARED IN THE LAST 10 YEARS. FOUR INCREASINGLY GENERAL MODELS ARE PRESENTED, WITH EMPHASIS ON THEIR UNDERLYING ASSUMPTIONS. NEXT, RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE ECONOMETRICS OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR ARE REVIEWED, WITH PARTICULAR FOCUS ON TECHNIQUES USED TO STUDY THE INTERACTION BETWEEN CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. POSSIBILITIES FOR INFERRING THE IMPACTS OF DETERRENCE POLICIES THROUGH OBSERVATION AND ANALYSIS OF INDIVIDUAL CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR ARE ALSO EXPLORED. IN THE FINAL REVIEW ARTICLE, RECENT THEORETICAL LITERATURE DEALING WITH PUBLIC POLICY TOWARD CRIME IS EXAMINED, AND A FUNDAMENTAL LOGICAL OBJECTION TO BECKER'S WORK IS PRESENTED. THE EMPIRICAL STUDIES ESTIMATE A SYSTEM OF SUPPLY EQUATIONS FOR THE INCOME-GENERATING ACTIVITIES OF BURGLARY, LARCENY, ROBBERY, AND LEGAL WORK; ESTIMATE AN IMPLICITLY ADDITIVE INDIRECT PRODUCTION FUNCTION FOR METROPOLITAN POLICE DEPARTMENT WORK; USE A MULTI-INPUT, MULTI-OUTPUT PRODUCTION COST FUNCTION TO ESTIMATE THE STRUCTURE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY; AND DEVELOP A SUPPLY AND DEMAND MODEL FOR STOLEN AUTOMOBILES WHICH CONTAINS A CRIME PREVENTION SECTOR. TABLES, FIGURES, FOOTNOTES, BIBLIOGRAPHIES, AND APPENDIXES ARE INCLUDED. FOR SPECIFIC CHAPTERS IN THIS VOLUME, SEE NCJ 61013-61020. (CFW)
