THE ACTIVITIES AND CONDITION OF NEW YORK STATE'S UNFIFIED COURT SYSTEM FOR 1978 ARE DETAILED IN THIS FIRST ANNUAL REPORT OF THE CHIEF ADMINISTRATOR OF THE COURTS.
Abstract
THE GOALS, STRUCTURE, ADMINISTRATION, AND FINANCING OF NEW YORK'S COURTS ARE DESCRIBED. THE COURTS' PROGRESS IS DISCUSSED IN COMPLYING WITH GOALS ADOPTED IN 1975 FOR REDUCING DELAYS IN CASE DISPOSITION. DATA SHOW THAT THE SPEED OF HANDLING CASES HAS INCREASED FOR BOTH FAMILY COURT AND CRIMINAL CASES, BUT NOT FOR CIVIL CASES. DETAILED STATISTICS DESCRIBE 1978 OPERATIONS FOR THE SUPREME COURT, APPELLATE COURT, CITY AND DISTRICT COURTS, COURT OF CLAIMS, SURROGATES, COURT, AND FAMILY COURTS. SPECIAL PROGRAMS ARE ALSO EXAMINED, INCLUDING THE MENTAL HEALTH INFORMATION SERVICE AND THE CENTRAL INDEX FOR POSTCONVICTION APPLICATIONS. EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAMS CONDUCTED, COORDINATED, OR ASSISTED BY THE OFFICE OF COURT ADMINISTRATION IN 1978 ARE OUTLINED. FINALLY, 1978 LEGISLATION SPONSORED BY THE COURT ADMINISTRATOR'S OFFICE AND RULES ADDED OR REVISED, ARE SUMMARIZED. ADVISORY COMMITTEE REPORTS ON CIVIL LAW AND PROCEDURE, CRIMINAL LAW AND PROCEDURE, AND FAMILY COURTS ARE INCLUDED, AS WELL AS A MAP, FIGURES, AND EXTENSIVE TABLES. (CFW)
