SELECTED FINDINGS FROM A COHORT STUDY OF RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN JUVENILE DELINQUENCY AND ADULT CRIMINAL CAREERS ARE REPORTED.
Abstract
THE REPORT IS ONE IN A SERIES BASED ON DATA GATHERED IN INTERVIEWS WITH MEMBERS OF TWO BIRTH COHORTS--1942 AND 1949--RESIDING IN RACINE, WIS. ANALYSES FOCUS ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POLICE CONTACTS AND AREA OF RESIDENCE; DIFFERENCES AMONG VARIOUS TYPES OF POLICE CONTACTS, INCLUDING TRAFFIC AND NONTRAFFIC, FELONY AND NONFELONY; AND AGE/RACE/ETHNICITY DIFFERENCES IN THE NATURE AND FREQUENCY OF POLICE CONTACTS AND REFERRALS (OFFICIAL RECORD ENTRIES). AMONG FINDINGS REPORTED ARE THE FOLLOWING: (1) TRAFFIC OFFENSES PLAY AN IMPORTANT PART IN DELINQUENT AND CRIMINAL CAREERS, INTERTWINING WITH NONTRAFFIC REASONS FOR POLICE CONTACT; (2) MOST DELINQUENT AND ADULT OFFENDERS HAVE POLICE CONTACTS IN THEIR AREAS OF RESIDENCE OR IN CONTIGUOUS AREAS; AND (3) ALTHOUGH REFFERRALS ARE MORE FREQUENT FOR MINORITY GROUP MEMBERS, THE PATTERN IS INFLUENCED BY POLICE CONTACT FREQUENCY, REASONS, AND PLACE. THE REPORT INCLUDES NARRATIVE ANALYSIS, FOOTNOTES, AND 61 TABLES, BUT NO INFORMATION ON STUDY METHODS.
