THIS REPORT SUMMARIZES 16 DISCUSSION WORKSHOPS HELD AT A 1978 ALASKAN STATEWIDE CONFERENCE ON INCARCERATION AND RE-ENTRY ALTERNATIVES, ATTENDED BY BUSINESSMEN AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM PERSONNEL.
Abstract
GOALS OF THE CONFERENCE WERE TO EXCHANGE INFORMATION AND DEVELOP POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS. FOR EACH WORKSHOP, THE MATERIAL COVERED, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE BRIEFLY LISTED. FOR EXAMPLE, THE WORKSHOP ON HIRING EX-OFFENDERS RECOMMENDED CHANGES WITHIN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, UNIONS, EMPLOYMENT AGENCIES, AND THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY. THE WORKSHOP ON TREATMENT ALTERNATIVES IDENTIFIED 14 ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT PROGRAMS AVAILABLE IN ALASKA, AND CONCLUDED THAT PUNISHMENT AND REHABILITATION ARE MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE GOALS. OTHER WORKSHOPS COVERED (1) JUVENILE JUSTICE ALTERNATIVES, (2) SENTENCING ALTERNATIVES, (3) WORK RELEASE AND DIVERSIONARY PROGRAMS, (4) PRISON MINISTRIES, (5) PROBLEMS OF WOMEN PRISONERS, (6) PRISON INDUSTRIES, (7) MENTAL HEALTH ALTERNATIVES, (8) PRISONER'S RIGHTS, (9) BUSH JUSTICE ALTERNATIVES, (10) PRISON CONSTRUCTION, (11) ORGANIZATIONS FOR EX-OFFENDERS, (12) PROBATION AND PAROLE ISSUES, (13) SOCIAL SERVICES TO PRISONERS AND FAMILIES, AND (14) PRISON ADMINISTRATION IN AN INTAKE FACILITY. THE CONFERENCE WAS COSPONSORED BY THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE OF BUSINESSMEN AND THE COALITION ON CORRECTIONS THROUGH SUPPORT OF THE ALASKA HUMANITIES FORUM AND THE STATE OF ALASKA. (CFW)
