STATISTICS ON CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT IN HAWAII ARE PROVIDED IN THIS 1977 REPORT BY THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES AND HOUSING.
Abstract
TOPICS COVERED INCLUDE GENERAL INFORMATION (DISTRIBUTION OF INCIDENTS BY ISLAND OR CENSUS TRACT, SOURCES OF REPORTS, AND THE AGES OF CHILDREN INVOLVED); AND FURTHER STATISTICS ABOUT VICTIMS, ABUSERS, ABUSE AND NEGLECT OF CHILDREN FROM MILITARY FAMILIES, AND SEXUAL OF CHILDREN. DURING 1974, 1,794 CASES OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT WERE RECEIVED BY THE HAWAIIAN DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES AND HOUSING, AN INCREASE OF 35 PERCENT OVER 1976. MOREOVER, 47 PERCENT OF THE REPORTED CASES WERE CONFIRMED. OAHU RECEIVED 73.9 PERCENT OF ALL REPORTS, WITH 2 OAHU AREAS REPORTING INCREASES OF 132-144 PERCENT. REPORTS ON CHILDREN FROM MILITARY FAMILIES INCREASED 146 PERCENT ACROSS THE STATE, WHILE CIVILIAN REPORTS INCREASED 23 PERCENT; 31 PERCENT OF ALL CONFIRMED ABUSE CASES OCCURRED IN MILITARY FAMILIES. SCHOOL PERSONNEL AND NEIGHBORS REPORTED THE GREATEST NUMBER OF INCIDENTS, AND 35 PERCENT OF ALL CONFIRMED CASES INVOLVED CHILDREN AGE 6 OR YOUNGER. THE GREATEST INCREASES IN CONFIRMED ABUSE WERE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SEXUAL. ALTHOUGH GIRLS WERE MORE FREQUENTLY NEGLECTED OR ABUSED, BOYS SUFFERED THE MOST SERIOUS INJURIES FROM BOTH. OVER 60 PERCENT OF NEGLECTED AND ABUSED CHILDREN REQUIRED NO MEDICAL ATTENTION, AND MOST OF THOSE HOSPITALIZED WERE UNDER 6 YEARS OF AGE. MIXED HAWAIIAN AND CAUCASIAN CHILDREN WERE MOST OFTEN ABUSED OR NEGLECTED, AND 20 PERCENT OF ALL CONFIRMED CASES WERE REMOVED FROM THEIR HOMES. NUMEROUS CHARTS AND TABLES ARE INCLUDED; AN APPENDIX COVERS HAWAIIAN STATUTES ON CHILD ABUSE, SUMMARIES OF ABUSE-NEGLECT REPORTS (1967-77), AND CHILD ABUSE REPORTING FORMS. NO REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. (PAP)
