THE FILMSTRIP AND CASSETTE TAPE PRESENTATION, PART OF A LAW EDUCATION PROGRAM DEVELOPED FOR THE DADE COUNTY, FLA., JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS, DESCRIBES AND ILLUSTRATES CONTEMPORARY POLICE OFFICERS' FUNCTIONS AND TRAINING.
Abstract
THE PRESENTATION'S GOALS ARE TO IDENTIFY AND DESCRIBE FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR A POLICE CAREER AND TO DEFINE AND ILLUSTRATE COMMONLY-USED TERMS RELATED TO POLICE ROLES AND TRAINING. THE FILMSTRIP FOCUSES ON THE TRAINING PROGRAM AT THE SOUTHEAST FLORIDA INSTITUTE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, WHICH IS REPRESENTATIVE OF MANY TRAINING PROGRAMS IS THE U.S. POLICE OFFICERS' CURRENT RESPONSIBILITIES ARE CONTRASTED WITH THOSE OF POLICE IN EARLIER TIMES. OFFICERS FROM SEVERAL POLICE DEPARTMENTS ARE SHOWN IN SCENES ILLUSTRATING VARIOUS POLICE RESPONSIBILITY AREAS, INCLUDING TRAFFIC, DOMESTIC PROBLEMS, DISASTER PREPAREDNESS, TERRORIST BOMBINGS, AND CRIMINAL APPREHENSION. CLASSROOM TRAINING, FIELD NOTETAKING, DEFENSIVE DRIVING, MOCK COURTROOM SITUATION ROLEPLAYING, FIREARMS TRAINING, AND INSERVICE REFRESHER EDUCATION ARE ILLUSTRATED. THE FILMSTRIP IS PART OF THE LAW EDUCATION GOALS AND LEARNING (LEGAL) PROJECT OPERATED BY THE DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD AND FUNDED UNDER TITLE IV OF THE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT. THE PROGRAM GOAL IS TO DEVELOP STUDENT UNDERSTANDING AND SKILLS RELATED TO THE CRIMINAL AND CIVIL (CONSUMER) JUSTICE SYSTEMS.
