THE FILMSTRIP AND CASSETTE TAPE PRESENTATION, PART OF A LAW EDUCATION PROGRAM DEVELOPED FOR THE DADE COUNTY, FLA., SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS, DESCRIBES AND ILLUSTRATES THE CURRICULUM'S COMMUNITY LAW RESEARCH PROJECT.
Abstract
IN THIS PROJECT, STUDENTS CONDUCT FIELD RESEARCH IN ORDER TO DEEPEN THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF LEGAL CONCEPTS AND TO RECEIVE DIRECT EXPOSURE TO CAREER POSSIBILITIES. STUDENTS MAY CHOOSE RESEARCH PROJECTS IN EITHER CRIMINAL OR CONSUMER LAW. RESEARCH POSSIBILITIES INCLUDE FIELD WORK OR STUDY IN A PARTICULAR AGENCY VIA A SERVICE, ACTION, OR OBSERVATION PROJECT. EACH STUDENT MUST SPEND AT LEAST 5 HOURS WEEKLY ON THE CHOSEN PROJECT. IF FIELD RESEARCH IS IMPOSSIBLE, STUDENTS MAY CONDUCT SCHOOL-BASED PROJECTS EMPHASIZING COMMUNITY RESOURCE SPEAKERS, GROUP FIELD TRIPS, AND LIBRARY, TELEPHONE, AND MAIL RESEARCH. STUDENTS PREPARE AGREEMENTS DEFINING THEIR RESEARCH GOALS AND FORMATS. THEY ALSO MAINTAIN WEEKLY PROGRAM LOGS. THE STUDENT SOURCEBOOK LISTS POTENTIAL RESEARCH TOPICS. CLASS PRESENTATIONS AND COURSE EVALUATIONS COMPLETE THE COURSE. THE FILMSTRIP IS PART OF THE LAW EDUCATION GOALS AND LEARNING (LEGAL) PROJECT OPERATED BY THE DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD. THE PROGRAM GOAL IS TO DEVELOP STUDENT UNDERSTANDING AND SKILLS RELATED TO THE CRIMINAL AND CIVIL (CONSUMER) JUSTICE SYSTEMS.
