ACTIVITIES OF THE COURT ADMINISTRATOR OF PENNSYLVANIA DURING 1978 ARE HIGHLIGHTED; COURT STATISTICS ARE PRESENTED IN EXTENSIVE TABULAR FORM FOCUSING ON CASE VOLUME, TYPE OF OFFENSE, AND DISPOSITION.
Abstract
DURING 1978, THE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE SPONSORED THE FIRST CONSTABLES STATEWIDE TRAINING PROGRAM. IN ADDITION, CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSES ARE NOW REQUIRED FOR DISTRICT JUSTICES AND THE OFFICE INITIATED DEVELOPMENT OF A DISTRICT JUSTICE OFFICE PROCEDURES MANUAL. THE DESIGNING, PROGRAMMING, DOCUMENTING, AND PROCESSING OF DOCKET TRANSCRIPTS BEGAN. ALSO DURING 1978, THE OFFICE APPOINTED A DOMESTIC RELATIONS TASK FORCE TO MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR STATEWIDE STANDARDS FOR MANAGEMENT OF DOMESTIC RELATIONS CASES. REPORTS OF SUPREME COURT COMMITTEES SUCH AS THE CIVIL PROCEDURAL RULES COMMITTEE, THE CRIMINAL PROCEDURAL RULES COMMITTEE, AND THE JUDICIAL PLANNING COMMITTEE ARE INCLUDED. CASE VOLUMES ARE REPORTED IN STATISTICAL TABULAR FORM FOR THE APPELLATE COURT, THE COMMON PLEAS COURT, THE PHILADELPHIA MUNICIPAL COURT, AND THE DISTRICT JUSTICE COURTS. FOR 1978 A TOTAL OF 1,667,028 CASES WERE FILED IN THE DISTRICT JUSTICE COURTS, REPRESENTING A 1 PERCENT INCREASE OVER THE PREVIOUS YEAR. TRAFFIC CITATIONS NUMBERED 1,069,492; NONTRAFFIC CITATIONS 227,824; SUMMARY COMPLAINTS 115,818; MISDEMEANOR AND FELONY COMPLAINTS 90,338; AND CIVIL COMPLAINTS 163,556. FOR COMPARISON PURPOSES, STATISTICS SINCE 1974 ARE OFTEN INCLUDED IN THE TABLES. THE REPORT CONCLUDES WITH A JUDICIAL DIRECTORY SECTION LISTING SUPREME COURT, SUPERIOR COURT, COMMONWEALTH COURTS, SENIOR, AND DISTRICT JUDGES. TABULAR STATISTICAL DATA, CHARTS, AND MAPS COMPRISE THE BULK OF THE DOCUMENT. (LWM)
