THE BOOK PRESENTS KEY WORKLOAD AND PERFORMANCE STATISTICS FOR EACH U.S. COURT OF APPEALS AND EACH DISTRICT COURT FOR THE STATISTICAL YEARS ENDING JUNE 30, 1973 THROUGH 1978.
Abstract
THE DATA ARE PRESENTED IN A 'STATISTICAL PROFILE' FORMAT AND ALL INFORMATION PERTAINING TO A PARTICULAR COURT IS CONTAINED ON A SINGLE PAGE. WORKLOAD FIGURES FOR THE DISTRICT COURTS ARE IN 'PER JUDGESHIP' TERMS OBTAINED SIMPLY BY DIVIDING THE COURT'S TOTAL CASELOAD FIGURES BY ITS AUTHORIZED JUDGESHIPS. THE COURTS OF APPEALS FIGURES, SHOWN IN 'PER PANEL' TERMS, WERE OBTAINED BY DIVIDING THE TOTAL CASELOAD FIGURES BY THE NUMBER OF AUTHORIZED THREE-JUDGE PANELS. THESE COMPUTATIONS ALLOW INDIVIDUAL JUDGES TO MATCH THEIR EXPERIENCE AGAINST JUDGE PERFORMANCE AVERAGES IN THEIR OWN AND OTHER COURTS. ALSO, GIVEN THIS COMMON DENOMINATOR, CASELOADS IN DIFFERENT SIZE COURTS CAN BE COMPARED, WITH COURT SIZE BECOMING ALMOST IRRELEVANT IN THE COMPARISON. INCLUDED ALSO ARE JUDICIARY-WIDE CASELOAD AND PERFORMANCE AVERAGES FOR DISTRICT COURTS AS WELL AS A NATIONAL PROFILE FOR THE COURTS OF APPEALS. MAPS ILLUSTRATE EACH COURT CIRCUIT.
