THIS CITIZEN'S GUIDE SUGGESTS WAYS TO ASSESS CRIME PREVENTION NEEDS, ORGANIZE COMMUNITY CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS, AND UTILIZE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND FUNDING RESOURCES.
Abstract
THE GUIDE ENCOURAGES THE MOBILIZATION OF ALL COMMUNITY RESOURCES TO ADDRESS CRIME CAUSAL FACTORS OR REDUCE OPPORTUNITIES FOR CRIMINAL ACTS. IT ASSUMES THAT A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM OF CRIME PREVENTION UNITES VARIED DISCIPLINES, RESOURCES, AND APPROACHES. COLLECTIVE CITIZEN INVOLVEMENT IN BROAD-SCALE PROGRAMS IS RECOMMENDED AND COOPERATION WITH THE POLICE EMPHASIZED. STEPS IN ORGANIZING A COMMUNITY CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM INCLUDE IDENTIFYING MAJOR CRIME PROBLEMS, ADDING CRIME PREVENTION TO AN ORGANIZATION'S AGENDA, UTILIZING COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATIONS AND CHURCH GROUPS, SETTING GOALS, AND DEVELOPING A PLAN OF ACTION. SENIOR CITIZEN CRIME PREVENTION ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS ESCORT SERVICES AND SAFETY EDUCATION, ARE DESCRIBED, AS ARE THE FORMING, PLANNING, AND IMPLEMENTING OF BLOCK CLUBS. SAMPLES OF AN ORGANIZATION MODEL, CRIME PREVENTION ANNOUNCEMENTS, BLOCK MEETING AND MINUTES OF A BLOCK CLUB MEETING ARE GIVEN. A PROGRAM OF YOUTH CRIME PREVENTION PROJECTS IS PROVIDED. FUNDING SOURCES DISCUSSED INCLUDE LEAA, FOUNDATIONS, GRANT PROPOSALS, AND FEDERAL AND PRIVATE SOURCES. A LISTING OF RESOURCE MATERIALS, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND TRAINING ORGANIZATIONS, INFORMATION SOURCES, AND FEDERAL AGENCIES IS FURNISHED. REFERENCES ARE GIVEN. (MJW)
