AN OVERVIEW OF 911 EMERGENCY TELEPHONE SERVICE IS PRESENTED IN A BOOKLET DESIGNED TO ACQUAINT INDEPENDENT TELEPHONE COMPANIES IN MICHIGAN WITH THE 911 CONCEPT AND TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT ITS IMPLEMENTATION.
Abstract
THE BOOKLET COVERS THE PURPOSE OF 911 SERVICE, HOW THE SERVICE WORKS, ITS EFFECT ON THE WORKLOAD OF TELEPHONE COMPANY OPERATORS, THE STATUS OF 911 SYSTEMS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY, AND THE PUBLIC'S REACTION TO THE SERVICE. PROBLEMS LIKELY TO BE ENCOUNTERED BY A TELEPHONE COMPANY WHEN A COMMUNITY DECIDES TO ESTABLISH 911 SERVICE ARE NOTED, AS ARE POLICIES DEVELOPED BY LARGER TELEPHONE COMPANIES IN MICHIGAN REGARDING INSTALLATION OF NEW EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR 911 SERVICE, COVERAGE OF THE SERVICE, AND RELATIONS WITH THE 911 CONTRACTING AGENCY. PLANNING GUIDELINES AND SOURCES OF ASSISTANCE FOR COMMUNITIES CONSIDERING 911 SERVICE ARE OFFERED, AND WAYS IN WHICH TELEPHONE COMPANIES CAN COOPERATE WITH COMMUNITIES ARE DISCUSSED. THE OPERATING PROCEDURES OF A TYPICAL 911 SERVICE BUREAU ARE OUTLINED.
