THIS CHRONOLOGY, COMPILED FROM ARAB SOURCES AND PUBLISHED IN ISRAEL, LISTS ACTS OF VIOLENCE COMMITTED FOR POLITICAL GOALS WITHIN OR AMONG THE 18 ARAB COUNTRIES FROM 1948 THROUGH 1973.
Abstract
ACTS OF VIOLENCE LISTED INCLUDE REVOLUTIONS, MILITARY TAKEOVERS OF GOVERNMENTS, MURDERS, WARS, SUBVERSION, BREAKING OFF OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS, AND POLITICAL UNIONS AND DISSOLUTIONS. SINCE 1948 THERE HAVE BEEN 30 SUCCESSFUL REVOLUTIONS IN THE ARAB COUNTRIES AND AT LEAST 44 UNSUCCESSFUL ONES. OVER 80 KNOWN POLITICAL MURDERS HAVE OCCURRED; 18 HEADS OF STATE AND PRIME MINISTERS HAVE BEEN KILLED. THERE HAVE BEEN 12 BORDER CLASHES, WARS, OR CIVIL WARS. CERTAIN GOVERNMENTS, ESPECIALLY EGYPT, HAVE OFTEN TRIED TO SUBVERT OTHER ARAB STATES' REGIMES. IN THE PAST 15 YEARS, ARAB GOVERNMENTS HAVE SUSPENDED OR BROKEN OFF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH ONE ANOTHER 21 TIMES. ALL FIVE ATTEMPTS TO FORM MULTINATIONAL ARAB STATES SINCE 1958 HAVE FAILED. THE GOVERNMENTS OF IRAQ, SYRIA, AND SUDAN HAVE COMMITTED MASS MURDER AGAINST THEIR CITIZENS. MAPS AND CHRONOLOGICAL LISTINGS OF EVENTS IN EACH COUNTRY ARE INCLUDED. (CFW)
