Abstract
THE MATERIALS ARE PART OF A DECENTRALIZED TRAINING PROGRAM USING PROGRAMMED TEXTBOOK, VIDEOTAPE, AND FILMS. THEY WERE DEVELOPED BY THE EDUCATION AND TRAINING DIVISION OF THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY POLICE TRAINING ACADEMY. THE GOAL OF THE FIREARMS TRAINING UNIT IS TO SATISFY THE MARYLAND TRAINING COMMISSION REQUIREMENT OF 2 HOURS OF CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION IN PROPER FIREARMS HANDLING PROCEDURES, SAFETY PROCEDURES, AND CIVIL LIABILITIES WITH RESPECT TO FIREARMS. UPON COMPLETING THE UNIT, OFFICERS WILL BE ABLE TO (1) EXPLAIN THE LEGAL RESPONSIBILIES INVOLVED IN FIREARMS USE; (2) DEMONSTRATE PROPER PROCEDURES FOR HANDLING, TRANSPORTING, STORING, AND CLEANING HANDGUNS; AND (3) DESCRIBE SURVIVAL TECHNIQUES WHEN FACED WITH LIFE-THREATENING SITUATIONS INVOLVING FIREARMS. THE INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE PRESENTS THE LEARNING GOAL, PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES, PRETRAINING ACTIONS, LESSON MATERIALS, EQUIPMENT REQUIRED, PROGRAM LENGTH, TRAINING CREDIT, AND ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES ASSOCIATED WITH THE FIREARMS TRAINING UNIT. THE STUDENT WORKBOOK INCLUDES DISCUSSIONS OF EACH SUBJECT AREA, FOLLOWED BY SENTENCE COMPLETION EXERCISES AND OTHER WRITTEN EXERCISES. ILLUSTRATIONS, A REFERENCES LIST, AND ANSWERS TO EACH WRITTEN EXERCISE ARE PROVIDED.
