CHANGES IN ARAB NATIONALISM FROM AN ELITE EFFORT TO PROTECT A CULTURAL HERITAGE UNDER THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE TO THE TERRORIST ATTACKS AGAINST ISRAEL IN THE 1960'S ARE DESCRIBED IN THIS ARTICLE.
Abstract
IN THE PALESTINIAN-ARAB NATIONALIST MOVEMENT THE ROOTS OF NATIONALISM CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO ARABS' AWARENESS OF THEMSELVES AS A SEPARATE ETHNIC COMMUNITY AND TO THEIR EFFORTS TO OBTAIN POLITICAL RIGHTS AS CITIZENS OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE. THE MOVEMENT GAINED WIDESPREAD PUBLIC SUPPORT WITH THE BREAKUP OF THE EMPIRE FOLLOWING WORLD WAR I AND WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF ZIONISM AFTER THE BRITISH CONQUEST OF PALESTINE BETWEEN DECEMBER 1917 AND SEPTEMBER 1918. CHANGES IN PALESTINIAN-ARAB NATIONALIST MOVEMENT POLICY WITH THE SUPPORT OF UNIFICATION WITH SYRIA IN 1920, THE COLLAPSE OF THE SEMI-INDEPENDENT ARAB REGIME OF FEISAL IN DAMASCUS AND CONSEQUENT DISAPPEARANCE OF THE DREAM OF ARAB UNITY, GROWING OPPOSITION TO ZIONISM BY VARIOUS ARAB SOCIETIES, THE DECLINE AND SPLIT OF THE NATIONALIST MOVEMENT, AND THE REAPPEARANCE OF FAMILY RIVALRIES IN THE 1920'S. THE PALESTINIAN-ARAB MOVEMENT BECAME RADICAL DURING THE 1930'S AND LATER SAW THE 'PAN-ARABIZATION' OF THE ARAB STRUGGLE IN PALESTINE, THE FRAGMENTATION OF THE PALESTINIAN-ARAB POPULATION FOLLOWING ITS 1948 DEFEAT BY ISRAEL, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FIRST INDEPENDENT PALESTINIAN EFFORT, ALSO PAN-ARAB IN CHARACTER, OF THE MOVEMENT OF ARAB NATIONALISTS ORGANIZED BY DR. GEORGE HABASH. OTHER MAJOR PALESTINIAN NATIONALIST GROUPS ARE DESCRIBED AND FOOTNOTES ARE INCLUDED. (AOP)
