THIS 1979 SYMPOSIUM ADDRESS DESCRIBES VARIOUS AUTOMATED CRIMINAL JUSTICE INFORMATION SYSTEMS INTRODUCED IN THE U.S. OVER THE PAST DECADE.
Abstract
HIGH TECHNOLOGY AND COMPUTERIZED INFORMATION SYSTEMS HAVE GREATLY BENEFITED CRIME CONTROL OVER THE PAST DECADE. PROSECUTORS' MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (PROMIS) IMPROVES PROSECUTOR EFFICIENCY BY SPEEDING UP PAPER FLOW AND THUS IMPROVING DECISIONMAKING. IN THE OFFENDER BASED STATE CORRECTIONS INFORMATION SYSTEM (OBSCIS), USED IN 35 STATES, CORRECTIONS PERSONNEL HAVE READY ACCESS TO INFORMATION ON ANY PRISONER FROM ANY STATE USING THE SYSTEM. POLICE OPERATIONS SUPPORT SYSTEM ELEMENTARY (POSSE), A RECORDS SYSTEM INEXPENSIVE ENOUGH FOR SMALL JURISDICTIONS, REDUCES PERSONNEL TIME IN MAKING REPORTS, KEEPS TRACK OF ARREST WARRANTS ISSUED, AND HELPS LOCATE STOLEN PROPERTY. IN ADDITION, CITIZENS IN OVER 700 COMMUNITIES NOW CAN QUICKLY REACH THE POLICE THROUGH THE 911 EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBER. THE COMPREHENSIVE DATA SYSTEM (CDS) PROVIDES POLICE AND GOVERNMENT WITH STATE-LEVEL CRIME STATISTICS AND ANALYSES. OFFENDER BASED TRANSACTION STATISTICS (OBTS) WILL SOON BE REPORTING ON THE FLOW OF DEFENDANTS THROUGH THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IN 12 STATES. THE STANDARDIZED CRIME REPORTING SYSTEM (SCRS) IS A SUCCESSFUL MODEL FOR COLLECTING, STORING, AND DISSEMINATING CRIMINAL DATA, AND ATTRIBUTE BASED CRIME REPORTING (ABCR) CLASSIFIES INFORMATION FROM SCRS. OTHER SYSTEMS DIRECT CRIME CONTROL AMONG POLICE, IDENTIFY ESSENTIAL PARTS OF CRIME ANALYSIS, AND EXCHANGE INTERSTATE POLICE MESSAGES ELECTRONICALLY. (PAP)
