THIS ILLUSTRATED TRAINING MANUAL DESCRIBING HOW TO FIND A JOB IS DESIGNED FOR USE BY JAIL INMATES IN A PREEMPLOYMENT TRAINING PROGRAM AIMED AT INCREASING WORK-RELATED SOCIAL SKILLS.
Abstract
AFTER COMPLETING THE TRAINING UNIT OF WHICH THIS MANUAL IS A PART, THE LEARNER SHOULD BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE THE NEED FOR SELF-CONFIDENCE AND MOTIVATION, RECOGNIZE THE NEED FOR EXTENSIVE EFFORTS TO FIND A JOB, USE ALL AVAILABLE RESOURCES, GET THE PERSON CONTACTED INTERESTED IN HIRING, AND RECOGNIZE THAT SUCCESS IN JOBHUNTING USUALLY COMES FROM HARD WORK. THE MANUAL INCLUDES A LIST OF LEARNING GOALS AND SUBGOALS, DIRECTIONS FOR USING THE MANUAL, UNIT PRETEST AND POSTTEST, DESCRIPTIONS OF STEPS INVOLVED IN JOBHUNTING, REVIEW QUESTIONS, UNIT TEST KEY, A DICTIONARY OF WANT ADVERTISEMENT ABBREVIATIONS, A WORD LIST, AND SPACE FOR NOTES. THE MANUAL IS PART OF A CURRICULUM MATERIALS PACKAGE DEVELOPED BY THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION AS PART OF A DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM, FUNDED BY A LEAA GRANT, WAS IMPLEMENTED IN FOUR LOCAL JAILS IN 1979. TITLED COORDINATED COMMUNITY OFFENDER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS, IT IS DESIGNED TO INCREASE INMATES' EMPLOYABILITY AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES BY TEACHING CONSUMER AND LIFE SKILLS NEEDED TO COPE IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY AS WELL AS SKILLS RELATED IN LOCATING AND FINDING EMPLOYMENT. ALTHOUGH DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR ADULT INMATES IN CITY AND COUNTY JAILS, THE PROGRAM CAN BE ADAPTED TO JUVENILE AND TO TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS. FOR OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE TRAINING MATERIALS PACKAGE, SEE NCJ 63908-63911 AND 63913-63925. (CFW)
