THIS ILLUSTRATED TRAINING MANUAL ON KEEPING A JOB IS DESIGNED FOR USE BY JAIL INMATES IN A PREEMPLOYMENT TRAINING PROGRAM AIMED AT INCREASING WORK-RELATED SOCIAL SKILLS.
Abstract
AFTER COMPLETING THE TRAINING UNIT OF WHICH THIS MANUAL IS A PART, THE LEARNER SHOULD BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE SOME BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT KEEPING A JOB. SPECIFIC TASKS ARE RECOGNIZING THAT THE FIRST 30 TO 90 DAYS ON A JOB ARE USUALLY CONSIDERED TO BE A PROBATIONARY PERIOD, KEEPING GOOD RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE SUPERVISOR AND COWORKERS, AND SHOWING AN INTEREST IN THE COMPANY. THE MANUAL INCLUDE A LIST OF LEARNING GOALS AND SUBGOALS, DIRECTIONS FOR USING THE MANUAL, UNIT PRETEST AND POSTTEST, ILLUSTRATED STEP-BY-STEP DIRECTIONS FOR KEEPING A JOB, REVIEW QUESTIONS, UNIT-TEST KEY, WORD LIST, AND BLANK SPACE FOR TEACHER'S NOTES. THE MANUAL IS PART OF A CURRICULUM MATERIALS PACKAGE DEVELOPED BY THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION AS PART OF A DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM, FUNDED BY A LEAA GRANT, WAS IMPLEMENTED IN FOUR LOCAL JAILS IN 1979. TITLED COORDINATED COMMUNITY OFFENDER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS, IT IS DESIGNED TO INCREASE INMATES' EMPLOYABILITY AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES BY TEACHING CONSUMER AND LIFE SKILLS NEEDED TO COPE IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY AS WELL AS SKILLS RELATED TO LOCATING AND FINDING EMPLOYMENT. ALTHOUGH DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR ADULT INMATES IN CITY AND COUNTY JAILS, THE PROGRAM CAN BE ADAPTED TO JUVENILE AND OTHER TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS. FOR OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE TRAINING MATERIALS PACKAGE, SEE NCJ 63908-63915 AND 63917-63925. (CFW)
