TABLES PRESENT CROSS-TABULATIONS OF CASE DISPOSITION FOR ALL CASES DOCKETED IN 1978 IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND THOSE CARRIED OVER FROM PREVIOUS YEARS TO ANALYZE THE STATUS OF THE CASE AND THE TIME IT TOOK TO REACH A DISPOSITION.
Abstract
DATA USED FOR THE ANALYSES WERE OBTAINED FROM THE CRIMINAL DOCKET REPORTS SUBMITTED TO THE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE. ANALYSES WERE DONE BY CIRCUIT AND FOR THE STATE AS A WHOLE. TO BE CONSISTENT IN THE WAY CASES COUNTED FOR EACH CIRCUIT, EACH DEFENDANT WAS TREATED AS A SEPARATE CASE EVEN THOUGH THE DEFENDANT MAY HAVE BEEN INDICTED AND PROSECUTED AS ONE OF A GROUP. IN THOSE CASES IN WHICH DEFENDANTS HAD MULTIPLE CHARGES AGAINST THEM, THE STATUS OF EACH CHARGE WAS CONSIDERED AND ONE OVERALL STATUS WAS ASSIGNED TO THE CASE BASED ON THE STATUS WITH THE HIGHEST PRIORITY. THE HIERARCHY OF DISPOSITIONS IS AS FOLLOWS: SUCCESSFUL, NOT GUILTY, JUDICIAL DISMISSAL, TRANSFER, NOLLE PROSEQUI, AND PROSECUTION ENDED. LASTLY, ANY CASES WHICH DID NOT HAVE ANY OF THESE DISPOSITIONS WAS TREATED AS PENDING. TABLES PRESENT THE RESULTS OF THE ANALYSES. (WJR)
