THE HISTORY, INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF, FACULTY EXCHANGE PROGRAM AND CURRICULUM OF THE CANADIAN POLICE COLLEGE (CPC) LOCATED IN OTTAWA, ONTARIO, THE CAPITAL CITY OF CANADA, ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THE PRESENT OVERALL MISSION OF THE COLLEGE IS TO ENCOURAGE, GUIDE, AND STIMULATE NATIONWIDE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY EFFECTIVENESS. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES INCLUDE A CONTINUOUS REVIEW OF TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT NEEDS AND A TRANSLATION OF THOSE NEEDS INTO THE CURRICULUM. PROGRAM EVALUATION SYSTEMS AND DEVELOPMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES ARE ALSO LISTED AS IMPORTANT GOALS. LIKE ITS AMERICAN COUNTERPART, THE FBI-SPONSORED NATIONAL POLICE ACADEMY, THE COLLEGE COURSES DEVELOPED IN RESPONSE TO A NATIONAL NEED FOR POLICE OFFICER TRAINING. THE STAFF IS DRAWN FROM MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE (RCMP) AND OTHER CANADIAN POLICE AGENCIES, WITH GUEST SPEAKERS FROM THE ACADEMIC, BUSINESS, AND GOVERNMENT SECTORS. COURSES ARE OFFERED IN BOTH FRENCH AND ENGLISH. TWO PRINCIPAL ADMINISTRATIVE COURSES FORM THE NUCLEUS OF TRAINING AND EDUCATION FOR POLICE EXECUTIVES AND MANAGERS. OTHER SPECIALIZED COURSES INCLUDE IDENTIFICATION METHODS AND TECHNIQUES, INTELLIGENCE ANALYSIS, NEGOTIATORS COURSE, HOSTAGE AND BARRICADED PERSONS SITUATIONS, AND CRIME PREVENTION COORDINATORS. INFORMATION AND DISSEMINATION COMPONDENTS INCLUDE THE RESEARCH AND PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT BRANCH OF CPC, THE INFORMATION SERVICE, AND THE CANADIAN POLICE COLLEGE JOURNAL. FOOTNOTES ARE GIVEN. (AOP)
