Abstract
SPECIFIC TOPICS DISCUSSED INCLUDED GENERAL ISSUES AND PROBLEMS CONCERNING POLICE OFFICER SELECTION; RELIANCE ON PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTS AND RATING SCALES AS WELL AS ON EVALUATION PERFORMANCE IN SELECTION, USE OF HEIGHT AND WEIGHT AS SELECTION FACTORS, EFFECTIVENESS OF THE MUNICIPAL POLICE AND STATE HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICER SELECTION TEST PROJECT, AND THE VALIDITY FIELD TRAINING AND EVALUATION CONCEPT AS A PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL SYSTEM. EFFECTS OF COURT DECISIONS AND AFFIRMATIVE ACTION PROGRAMS ON POLICE SELECTION ARE COVERED WITH CASE EXAMPLES FROM THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLA., AND BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD. ALSO CONSIDERED ARE FEDERAL AND STATE PROGRAMS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER SELECTION; THOSE INCLUDE THE FBI'S PROGRAM FOR THE SELECTION OF SPECIAL AGENTS, NEW YORK STATE'S SYSTEM FOR TROOPER SELECTION, AND FLORIDA'S TEST BATTERY. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ASSESSMENT CENTERS IN THE SELECTION OF ENTRY-LEVEL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFICERS, SUCH AS THOSE USED IN FORT WORTH, TEX., AND IN WASHENTAW COUNTY, MICH., IS EXAMINED, AND RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY THAT AFFECT POLICE SELECTION.
