THREE TYPES OF EDUCATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS COURSES--CRISIS INTERVENTION, INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS, AND POLICE TECHNICAL REPORT WRITING--ARE DISCUSSED AND RECOMMENDED FOR ALL POLICE.
Abstract
AS POLICE WORK GROWS MORE PERSONAL, GOOD POLICE-COMMUNITY COMMUNICATION BECOMES MORE IMPORTANT; ACADEMIES MUST THUS TEACH BETTER COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS. A CRISIS INTERVENTION COURSE WOULD TEACH STRESS MANAGEMENT THROUGH ROLE-PLAYING SITUATIONS; STUDENTS LEARN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INTERVENTION AND INTRUSION, AND COME TO UNDERSTAND CAUSES OF STRESS. INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION REFER ONLY TO FACE-TO-FACE TWO-WAY COMMUNICATION AND INVOLVES LEARNING BETTER SPEECH AND PRESENTING IDEAS TO GROUPS; IT AIMS AT INCREASING POLICE CREDIBILITY. EFFECTIVE POLICE REPORTS ARE A SPECIALIZED TYPE OF OCCUPATIONAL COMMUNICATION. POLICE TECHNICAL REPORT WRITING COURSES EMPHASIZE TECHNICAL WRITING AND VOCABULARY. REPORT WRITING COURSES ARE USUALLY INTERDISCIPLINARY, FOCUSING ON CLEAR AND COHERENT WRITING AND VARIOUS POLICE REPORTING FORMS. TECHNICAL REPORT WRITING, INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS, AND CRISIS INTERVENTION ARE TAUGHT FOR POLICE AT KENT STATE UNIVERSITY, WHERE GOOD STUDENT-INSTRUCTOR RAPPORT HAS BEEN ACHIEVED, AND THE APPROVAL OF EXPERIENCED POLICE HAS BEEN OBTAINED. THESE COURSES MEET THE SPECIAL NEEDS OF POLICE AND GIVE GOOD PROBLEMSOLVING EXPERIENCE. MORE COLLEGES SHOULD OFFER SUCH COURSES AND MORE POLICE SHOULD TAKE THEM. FOOTNOTES ARE INCLUDED. (PAP)
