THIS STUDY WAS DEVELOPED TO ASSIST INCARCERATED OFFENDERS TO ASSESS THEIR LEVEL OF NEED PRIOR TO RELEASE.
Abstract
NINETEEN NEEDS OF JUST-RELEASED OFFENDERS WERE IDENTIFIED FROM A LITERATURE REVIEW AND WERE USED TO DEVELOP A PROFILE INSTRUMENT THAT WAS ADMINISTERED TO A SAMPLE OF 45 INMATES JUST BEFORE RELEASE AND 3 MONTHS AFTER RELEASE. FINDINGS SHOWED THAT SUBJECTS ACCURATELY PREDICTED THEIR NEEDS PRIOR TO RELEASE, WITH THOSE PREDICTING A HIGH LEVEL OF NEED HAVING DIFFICULTY IN REINTEGRATION. THOSE MOST LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE REINTEGRATION PROBLEMS WERE RELEASEES UNDER 21 YEARS OLD WITH A PRIOR PRISON RECORD AND A HIGH PRERELEASE NEED SCORE WHO, UPON RELEASE, SHOWED THE LARGEST AMOUNT OF CHANGE IN NEED AND AN OVERALL INCREASE IN THE AMOUNT OF NEED EXPRESSED. THE PROFILE TECHNIQUE DEVELOPED CAN THUS BE USED TO IDENTIFY THOSE MOST LIKELY TO HAVE DIFFICULTY ON RELEASE. BASED UPON FINDINGS FROM THE NEED-PROFILE INSTRUMENT, APPROPRIATE PERSONS CAN WORK WITH THE INMATE TO PLAN A SUITABLE REINTEGRATION PROGRAM. FINDINGS ALSO INDICATED THAT THE FIRST 3 MONTHS AFTER RELEASE IS THE CRITICAL PERIOD IN REINTEGRATION. APPENDIXES CONTAIN A SAMPLE OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE DEVELOPED AND OTHER MATERIALS USED IN THE STUDY. TABULAR AND GRAPHIC DATA AND A BIBLIOGRAPHY ARE PROVIDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--RCB)
