Abstract
A PROFILE IS PRESENTED OF TENNESSEE CORRECTIONS, INCLUDING A DESCRIPTION OF ITS ORGANIZATION AND RECENT HISTORY. SPECIFIC DATA WERE REQUESTED OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS. DATA WERE RECEIVED ON TENNESSEE'S GENERAL POPULATION FROM 1950 AND PROJECTED THROUGH 2000. THIS INCLUDES THE PERCENTAGE OF THOSE AGED 18 TO 34 YEARS AND THE BLACK POPULATION IN THIS AGE CATEGORY. THE HISTORICAL AVERAGE DAILY BLACK AND NONBLACK INMATE POPULATIONS ANNUALLY ARE PRESENTED FROM 1970 AND PROJECTED THROUGH 2000. THE AVERAGE DAILY INMATE POPULATION FOR THE SIX MAJOR ADULT INSTITUTIONS AND WORK RELEASE, WHEN APPROPRIATE, ARE PRESENTED YEARLY FROM FISCAL YEAR 1951 TO FISCAL YEAR 1977. DATA ARE ALSO PROVIDED ON COMMITMENTS, RELEASES, AGE OF COMMITMENTS, SEX OF AVERAGE DAILY POPULATION, COUNTY OF COMMITMENT, COMMITTING OFFENSE, AVERAGE LENGTH OF SENTENCE, FACILITIES, TOTAL OPERATING BUDGETS, EXPENDITURES, STAFF, PROBATION, AND PAROLE.
