A SPECIALIZED PROGRAM OF STUDY FOR PRIVATE SECURITY WORK IS RECOMMENDED FOR INCLUSION IN A CRIMINAL JUSTICE CURRICULUM, AND COURSE CONTENTS ARE SUGGESTED.
Abstract
THE EXPANSION OF THE PRIVATE SECURITY FIELD AND THE SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES IN JOB DESCRIPTIONS BETWEEN SECURITY PERSONNEL AND PUBLIC POLICE WARRANTS THE CREATION OF A SPECIAL COURSE OF STUDY IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN THE SECURITY FIELD. THE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO BE DERIVED DIRECTLY FROM THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION PROGRAMS SHOULD INCLUDE A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE NATURE AND CAUSES OF CRIME IN THE UNITED STATES; AN OVERVIEW OF THE OPERATORS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM; AN UNDERSTANDING OF PROCEDURAL AND SUBSTANTIVE LAW; A BASIC APPRECIATION OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT; ACQUISITION OF BASIC POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS SKILLS; AND AN OVERVIEW, HISTORY, AND INTRODUCTION TO PRIVATE SECURITY. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE ESSENTIAL FOR THE SECURITY FIELD SHOULD ALSO BE DRAWN FROM COLLEGES AND DEPARTMENTS OF BUSINESS, ACCOUNTING, PSYCHOLOGY, ARCHITECTURE, POLITICAL SCIENCE, AND SOCIOLOGY. NONACADEMIC PROGRAMS SHOULD PROVIDE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE IN FIRST AID, FIRE SAFETY (INCLUDING THE HANDLING OF BOMB THREATS), TRAFFIC CONTROL FOR EVACUATION AND REENTRY, FIREARMS TRAINING, TECHNIQUES, TO LESSEN LOSS AND DAMAGE TO PROPERTY AND PERSONS, TECHNIQUES FOR PROTECTING INFORMATION (DOCUMENT CONTROL), AND THE PERFORMANCE OF INTRUSION AND OTHER ALARM SYSTEMS.
