PRE-COURSE PREPARATION AND PROGRAM APPROACH ARE DESCRIBED FOR THE COLORADO OUTWARD BOUND WILDERNESS TRAINING PROGRAM FOR SELECTED RESIDENTS OF THE COLORADO STATE REFORMATORY AT BUENA VISTA.
Abstract
PRE-COURSE PREPARATION INCLUDES STAFF SELECTION, STUDENT SELECTION AND ORIENTATION, RECONNAISSANCE (SHORT HIKE INTO THE WILDERNESS), AND STAFF ORIENTATION. STAFF ARE SELECTED ON THE BASIS OF THEIR ABILITY TO RELATE TO DELINQUENTS AND TEACH THEM. WORKERS ALSO NEED RIGID PERSONAL DEFENSES FOR DEALING WITH THE PAIN OF EMOTIONAL DEPRIVATION. STUDENT SELECTION IS DETERMINED BY CRITERIA DERIVED FROM PREVIOUS PROGRAM EXPERIENCES AND BASED UPON THE LIKELIHOOD THAT A PERSON WILL COMPLETE AND PROFIT FROM THE PROGRAM. THOSE SELECTED MUST BE HIGHLY MOTIVATED TO PARTICIPATE AND COMPLETE THE PROGRAM; THEY ALSO MUST BE CLOSE TO PAROLE OR RELEASE SO THAT SKILLS AND BEHAVIORS LEARNED IN THE PROGRAM MAY BE IMMEDIATELY PRACTICED IN THE COMMUNITY. STUDENT ORIENTATION SHOULD CONSIST OF A FRANK PRESENTATION OF THE PROGRAM DEMANDS THROUGH A FILM OF THE PROGRAM IN ACTION AND THROUGH CONVERSATIONS WITH STAFF. STAFF ORIENTATION CONSISTS OF INCULCATING TEACHING METHODS APPROPRIATE FOR STUDENT CHARACTERISTICS. THE PROGRAM STRUCTURE IS DESCRIBED INCREMENTALLY IN TERMS OF THE OBJECTIVES TO BE ACCOMPLISHED. THE TWO-WEEK PROGRAM ITINERARY IS INCLUDED. (RCB)
