THE ANNUAL REPORT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONAL SERVICES OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA IS PRESENTED.
Abstract
A NEW REMAND CENTER WILL REPLACE THE ADELAIDE JAIL AND CONSTRUCTION SHOULD BEGIN IN 1980. THE YATALA LABOR PRISON HAD A DAILY AVERAGE OF 291 INMATES IN 1976-77. TENSIONS OF THE PREVIOUS YEARS NOW SEEN TO BE LARGELY DISPERSED AND THERE HAVE BEEN NO MAJOR PROBLEMS. IN ADELAIDE JAIL, THE AVERAGE DAILY NUMBER OF INMATES FELL FROM 212 TO 197. SECURITY REMAINED VERY GOOD AND DISCIPLINE WAS REASONABLE. THE WOMEN'S REHABILITATION CENTER HAD A DAILY AVERAGE OF 13 INMATES, AND 2 WOMEN GAVE BIRTH WHILE IN PRISON. THE SECURITY HOSPITAL HAD A DAILY AVERAGE OF 17 INMATES SENT FOR ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT OF PSYCHIATRIC PROBLEMS. DISCUSSIONS ARE PROGRESSING CONCERNING THE BUILDING OF ADDITIONS TO THE HOSPITAL. PREVIOUS POLICIES IN PRISON INDUSTRIES WERE CONTINUED AND OFFICIALS REPORTED PROGRESS ON THE PART OF INDIVIDUAL PRISONERS IN ABILITY AND OUTPUT. EDUCATION FOR PRISONERS HAS BEEN GIVEN MORE IMPORTANCE. A NUMBER OF SPECIAL CLASSES IN LITERACY AND NUMERACY ARE NOW BEING CONDUCTED BOTH AT YATALA LABOR PRISON AND ADELAIDE JAIL, WITH ADDITIONAL CLASSES BEING CONDUCTED IN MECHANICS, BUILDING, COMMERCIAL, VOCATIONAL, AND RURAL STUDIES. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE INCIDENCE OF HEPATITIS 'B', THERE HAVE BEEN NO MAJOR HEALTH PROBLEMS. TABLES, CHARTS, AND GRAPHS ARE INCLUDED. (PRG)
