THIS CURRICULUM GUIDE DESCRIBES MILWAUKEE'S LAW SATELLITE CENTER PROGRAM FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS, WHICH UTILIZES A FIELD STUDY APPROACH TO UNDERSTAND THE AMERICAN LEGAL SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE MILWAUKEE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM INSTITUTED A SPECIALTY PROGRAM FOR THE STUDY OF THE AMERICAN LEGAL SYSTEM WHICH DRAWS STUDENTS FROM THE CITY'S 15 HIGH SCHOOLS AND SEVERAL SUBURBAN DISTRICTS. THE CURRICULUM IS DESIGNED TO INCLUDE MANY FIELD OBSERVATION SESSIONS, COMMUNITY-ORIENTED RESEARCH PROJECTS, AND CONSTANT CONTACT WITH PROFESSIONALS IN LAW AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE. CLASSES DURING THE SEMESTER MEET 5 DAYS A WEEK FOR 2 HOURS EACH DAY. EACH CLASS IS LIMITED TO 25 STUDENTS. OBJECTIVES OF THE FIELD STUDY APPROACH TO LEGAL INCLUDE FAMILIARITY WITH THE ROLES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND TRAINING OF PERSONNEL INVOLVED IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, FAMILIARITY AS WELL AS WITH STATE AND LOCAL LAWS, KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC LEGAL PROCEDURES IN VARIOUS AREAS, AND KNOWLEDGE OF CRIME PREVENTION AND PUNISHMENT AND OF THE PENAL AND JUDICIAL SYSTEMS. COURSES OFFERED UNDER THE PROGRAM INCLUDE SOURCES OF LAW, FUNDAMENTALS OF THE U.S. LEGAL SYSTEM, THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, FAMILY LAW, LIMITS OF LAW, AND CONTRACTS AND CONSUMER LAW. OUTLINES FOR THESE AND OTHER COURSES ARE GIVEN ALONG WITH ADDITIONAL READINGS FOR THE STUDENT. APPENDIXES CONTAIN INTERSHIP SUGGESTIONS, WORKSHEET AND STUDY GUIDES, AND LISTS OF RESOURCES, REFERENCE MATERIALS, FILMS, AND AUDIOVISUAL AIDS. (MJW)
