A SUPPLEMENT TO THE REPORT OF THE SECRETARIAT GENERAL OF INTERPOL ON INTERNATIONAL CURRENCY COUNTERFEITING DURING 1976 SUMMARIZES INFORMATION RECEIVED AFTER THE REPORT HAD BEEN PRINTED.
Abstract
FIGURES INDICATE THAT THERE WAS AN INCREASE (10.3 PERCENT) OF NOTES SEIZED OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES RATHER THAN A DECREASE AS REPORTED, WITH THE INCREASE IN TOTAL FACE VALUE OF U.S. NOTES SEIZED AMOUNTING TO 72 PERCENT RATHER THAN 57 PERCENT AS STATED. MOREOVER, THERE WERE 46 NEW TYPES OF COUNTERFEITS IN 20 OTHER COUNTRIES RATHER THAN 48 IN 22. AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF PRINTSHOPS PRODUCING COUNTERFEIT ITALIAN BANKNOTES WAS OBSERVED. SEVERAL U.S. COUNTERFEIT TYPES, ONE DATING BACK TO 1949, WERE STILL IN CIRCULATION. SEVERAL CASES OF FORGERIES OF U.S. BILLS WITH CHANGED NUMBERS AS WELL AS CIRCULATION OF PUBLICITY-TYPE NOTES WERE REPORTED. IT IS NOTED THAT COUNTERFEIT COINS WERE NOT PRODUCED NEARLY AS FREQUENTLY AS BANKNOTES AND THAT ONLY CIRCULATION OF COUNTERFEIT GOLD COINS WITH THE SAME GOLD CONTENT AS GENUINE COINS PRESENTED ANY REAL DANGER. TABLES LIST COUNTERFEIT NOTES SEIZED, NEW TYPES OF NOTES RECORDED, AND COUNTERFEIT NOTES IN INTERNATIONAL CIRCULATION. FOR THE ORIGINAL REPORT, SEE NCJ 66351.
