A COOPERATIVE EFFORT CONDUCTED BY THE NEW HAVEN ANTI-CRIME CONSORTIUM TO INVOLVE THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES IN CRIME PREVENTION AND CRIME CONTROL MEASURES AND PROGRAMS IS DESCRIBED.
Abstract
FUNDED BY A LEAA GRANT, THE NEW HAVEN ANTI-CRIME CONSORTIUM HAS BEEN SPONSORING AND COORDINATING CRIME PREVENTION AND CRIME CONTROL ACTIVITIES INVOLVING NEIGHBORHOODS, POLICE, AND COMMUNITY GROUPS JOINED IN A COMMON EFFORT. THIS REPORT ON THE PROJECT SUMMARIZES THE ACTIVITIES FOR A 1-YEAR TEST (1978-1979). ACCORDING TO THE PROJECT MANAGERS' SELF-EVALUATION, THE PROJECT WAS A SUCCESS. AMONG THE VARIOUS PROGRAMS INCLUDED WERE ALCOHOL-RELATED SERVICES, A CURRICULUM DEVELOPED BY A LOCAL CHILDREN'S MUSEUM FOR SCHOOLAGE CHILDREN TO TEACH THEM HOW TO AVOID VICTIMIZATION, AND A COMMUNITY HOUSE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE OFFERING COUNSELING, SPORTS, AND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES TO KEEP YOUTHS CONSTRUCTIVELY OCCUPIED AND DEVELOP THEIR SOCIAL INTERACTION SKILLS. A BLOCK WATCH PROGRAM, COUNSELING SERVICES FOR HISPANIC YOUTH, AN ORGANIZATION FOR DISTRIBUTING CRIME PREVENTION INFORMATION, WERE FURTHER PROJECTS. DETAILS ON EACH OF THESE ARE GIVEN ALONG WITH BRIEF EVALUATIONS OF THEIR OPERATION. THE PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES OF THE PROGRAM FOR THE HANDICAPPED ARE DETAILED IN A SEPARATE EXHIBIT.
