PROCEEDINGS OF A 2-DAY WORKSHOP ON POLICE PRODUCTIVITY AND PERFORMANCE AT THE CANADIAN POLICE COLLEGE INCLUDE THE PAPERS GIVEN AT PLENARY SESSIONS AND FOLLOWING DISCUSSIONS, ADDRESSES, AND SMALL GROUP REPORTS.
Abstract
THE WORKSHOP WAS INTENDED TO ACQUAINT KEY FIGURES OF THE CANADIAN POLICE AND RESEARCH COMMUNITIES WITH CANADIAN, U.S., AND BRITISH RESEARCH ON POLICE PRODUCTIVITY AND PERFORMANCE AND TO HELP FORMULATE A RESEARCH PROGRAM. PERSPECTIVES INCLUDED ADDRESSING THE PROBLEMS OF INCREASING PRODUCTIVITY OF PREVAILING POLICE PRACTICES AND IDENTIFYING INNOVATIVE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES WHICH MIGHT ENHANCE POLICE PRODUCTIVITY. AMONG TOPICS DISCUSSED WERE GENERAL AND SPECIFIC PROBLEMS OF DEFINITION AND MEASUREMENT OF POLICE PRODUCTIVITY, POLICE PRODUCTIVITY IN OTHER COUNTRIES, POLICY AND OPERATIONAL IMPLICATIONS, PRODUCTIVITY AND STANDARDS FOR THE DELIVERY OF POLICE SERVICES, AND DECISIONMAKING BY SENIOR POLICE ADMINISTRATORS. ALSO CONSIDERED WERE THE SUBJECTS OF THE ROLE OF RESEARCH, THE PRODUCTIVITY ISSUE IN THE CONTEXT OF MANAGEMENT TRAINING, RESISTANCE TO CHANGE, AND INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL INDICATORS OR MEASURES OF PRODUCTIVITY. FINALLY, THE WORKSHOP CONCLUDED WITH A DISCUSSION OF THE FUTURE OF POLICING IN CANADA. TABLES, FIGURES, FOOTNOTES, AND REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED.
