Abstract
ADMISSIONS TO STATE-SUPERVISED ADULT PROBATION DECLINED FOR THE THIRD SUCCESSIVE YEAR. THERE WERE 7,630 KNOWN ADMISSIONS IN 1977, BUT SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC AND PROGRAM DATA FOR ONLY 7,065 ARE REPORTED. ALL WISCONSIN COUNTIES PLACED ADULTS UNDER DIVISION OF CORRECTIONS PROBATION SUPERVISION IN 1977. ADMISSION CASELOADS RANGED FROM 2,505 IN MILWAUKEE COUNTY TO 2 IN MENOMINEE COUNTY. DRUG LAW VIOLATIONS ACCOUNTED FOR 22 PERCENT OF THE ADULTS PLACED ON PROBATION. MORE THAN 50 PERCENT OF THE MEN AND WOMEN WERE PLACED ON PROBATION FOR LESS THAN 2 YEARS. MORE THAN 50 PERCENT OF THE MEN AND WOMEN WERE PLACED ON PROBATION FOR LESS THAN 2 YEARS. SIX OUT OF 10 MEN AND 57 PERCENT OF THE WOMEN PLACED UNDER SUPERVISION WERE UNDER 25 YEARS OF AGE. ABOUT FOUR-FIFTHS OF THE MEN AND THREE-FIFTHS OF THE WOMEN WERE WHITE. NEARLY THREE-FIFTHS OF THE MEN AND 50 PERCENT OF THE WOMEN WERE SINGLE. NEARLY ONE-THIRD OF THE MEN AND 45 PERCENT OF THE WOMEN WERE UNEMPLOYED WHEN PLACED ON PROBATION. ABOUT 10 PERCENT OF THE MEN AND WOMEN HAD MONTHLY EARNINGS OF LESS THAN $200 AND ALMOST 25 PERCENT OF THEM HAD NO REPORTED INCOME WHEN PLACED ON PROBATION. THREE TYPES OF DISPOSITION WERE POSSIBLE IN PROBATION CASES: AN IMPOSED AND STAYED SENTENCE, A WITHHELD SENTENCE, AND PROBATION WITHOUT CONVICTION. TABLES PROVIDE THE BULK OF THE REPORT.
