THE NORTH CAROLINA UNIFORM CRIME REPORT PROVIDES STATISTICAL DATA ON REPORTED CRIME AND LAW ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITY FOR 1978, ALONG WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE STATE'S CRIME REPORTING SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE TOTAL VOLUME OF CRIME IN NORTH CAROLINA ROSE 3.75 PERCENT DURING 1978, WITH PROPERTY CRIME SHOWING A GREATER INCREASE THAN VIOLENT CRIME. LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES THROUGHOUT THE STATE SUBMIT INFORMATION ON CRIMES COMMITTED IN THEIR AREAS TO THE POLICE INFORMATION NETWORK (PIN) WHICH THEN ANALYZES THE DATA. PIN ORGANIZATION AND REPORTING PROCEDURES ARE DESCRIBED, FOLLOWED BY A DISCUSSION OF DATA LIMITATIONS AND DEFINITIONS USED IN THE REPORTS. STATEWIDE PATTERNS OF THE SEVEN MAJOR CRIMES ARE ILLUSTRATED BY MAPS, CRIME CLOCKS, TABLES, AND GRAPHS IN A CRIME INDEX SECTION. AN EXAMINATION OF PROPERTY CRIME PRESENTS STATISTICS ON VALUE OF PROPERTY STOLEN AND RECOVERED BY MONTH, TYPE, AND OFFENSE. ARREST DATA IS CATEGORIZED BY OFFENSE, AGE SEX, RACE, AND COUNTY. ARRESTS FOR SALES AND POSSESSION OF DRUGS ARE ALSO DETAILED. TABLES PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE SEX AND STATUS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL FOR ALL AGENCIES, FOLLOWED BY DATA ON OFFICERS ASSAULTED OR KILLED. FINALLY, A SUMMARY CONTAINS COMPARATIVE STATISTICS ON ALL TYPES OF CRIME FOR 1977 AND 1978, CLEARANCE RATES, THE CRIME RATES FOT THE EIGHT STANDARD METROPOLITAN STATISTICAL AREAS IN NORTH CAROLINA, AND CRIME RATE TABLES FOR THE UNITED STATES. A HISTORY OF LOCAL AGENCY PARTICIPATION IN PIN IS INCLUDED. (MJM)
