A 2-DAY WORKSHOP ON STRESS MANAGEMENT IS DESCRIBED; FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH STRESS AND REMEDIES FOR MANAGING IT ARE EXPLAINED.
Abstract
STRESS ITSELF IS UNAVOIDABLE AND NOT ALWAYS BAD, BUT PEOPLE MUST LEARN HOW TO COPE WITH IT TO PRESERVE THEIR HEALTH. STRESS IS CAUSED BY A UNIQUE BLEND OF AN INDIVIDUAL'S INTERNAL DISPOSITIONS, HIS ENVIRONMENT, AND THE PRECIPITATING EVENT. THE ONLY COMMON FACTOR IS THAT THE PRECIPITATING EVENT INVOLVES A CHANGE, EITHER EXTERNAL OR INTERNAL. SOME RESEARCH EVEN INDICATES THAT STRESS CONTRIBUTES TO ACCIDENT PRONENESS AND ILLNESSES THAT ARE NOT NECESSARILY STRESS RELATED. THE STRESS MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP ADVOCATES SIX WAYS TO MITIGATE THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF STRESS: SUPPORT (CULTIVATION OF FRIENDS AND FAMILY), TALK (THE MOST EFFECTIVE TECHNIQUE FOR ALLEVIATING STRESS), RELAXATION, EXERCISE, SENSIBLE EATING, AND A SUNNY DISPOSITION. AFTER 2 DAYS OF LEARNING ABOUT THEMSELVES AND ABOUT STRESS, WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS DECIDE HOW TO DEVELOP THEIR COPING SKILLS WITH THE HELP OF THEIR OWN INTERPERSONAL SUPPORT GROUP. A STRESS QUIZ IS INCLUDED IN THE ARTICLE.
