THE VARIOUS FIELDS IN WHICH PSYCHOLOGISTS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PROVIDE POLICE DEPARTMENTS WITH TRAINING AND EXPERTISE ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THE GROWING IMPETUS TOWARD PROFESSIONALISM AND COMMUNITY-ORIENTED SERVICES IN LAW ENFORCEMENT DELIVERY DURING THE PAST DECADE REPRESENTS A WELCOME OPPORTUNITY FOR INTERACTION AMONG POLICE AND PROFESSIONAL IN THE MEDICAL, LEGAL, AND MENTAL HEALTH FIELDS. PSYCHOLOGISTS HAVE BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN DEVISING TRAINING AND CONSULTING PROGRAMS TO IMPROVE THE POLICE DEPARTMENT'S IMAGE WITH THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND TARGET SUBPOPULATIONS OF THE COMMUNITY. PSYCHOLOGICAL EXPERTISE IS REQUIRED BY POLICE PERSONNEL IN THE AREA OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS, IN FAMILY CRISIS INTERVENTION, AND IN OTHER SPECIALIZED INTERVENTION AREAS (E.G., RAPE INVESTIGATIONS, EMERGENCY APPREHENSIONS OF MENTALLY DISTURBED PATIENTS). PROGRAMS ADDRESSING ISSUES RELATED TO THE PERSONAL ADJUSTMENT OF POLICE OFFICERS HAVE ALSO BEEN DEVELOPED BY PSYCHOLOGISTS, WHO RECOGNIZE THE HIGH DEGREE OF STRESS INVOLVED IN POLICE WORK. PSYCHOLOGISTS HAVE DEVELOPED POLICE TRAINING MODELS, THE MOST EFFECTIVE OF WHICH EMPHASIZES A CONSULTING APPROACH THAT REINFORCES THE VIEW OF THE POLICE OFFICER AS A SERVICE PROFESSIONAL. A LIST OF 25 REFERENCES IS INCLUDED. (LGR)
