RESULTS ARE REPORTED FROM A SURVEY OF INMATES' OPINIONS ABOUT REHABILITATION PROGRAMS AT THE FEDERAL CORRECTIONS INSTITUTION IN LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY.
Abstract
A TOTAL OF 150 QUESTIONNAIRES WAS DISTRIBUTED IN GROUPS OF 50 TO 3 DIVISIONS OF THE FEDERAL CORRECTIONS INSTITUTION IN LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY: NEUMAN, A DIVISION OF ALCOHOLICS; ANTEUES, A DIVISION OF DRUG ADDICTS; AND VERITAS, A DIVISION OF WOMEN. QUESTIONNAIRES WERE PLACED IN CONVENIENT LOCATIONS IN EACH OF THE THREE DIVISIONS, AND RESPONDENTS WERE THOSE WHO CHOSE TO COMPLETE THE QUESTIONNAIRE. THERE WERE 34 USABLE RESPONSES FROM NEUMAN, 31 FROM ANTEUES, AND 40 FROM VERITAS, GIVING A TOTAL OF 105 RESPONSES. RESPONDENTS WERE ASKED TO EXPRESS AN OPINION ON WHETHER OR NOT REHABILITATION PROGRAMS PREPARE THEM TO RETURN TO SOCIETY AND FUNCTION WITHIN LIMITS OF PUBLIC TOLERANCE, WHETHER REHABILITATION PROGRAMS TREAT PROBLEMS INDIVIDUALLY, WHETHER COED INSTITUTIONS ARE BENEFICIAL IN REHABILITATION, WHETHER CHANGES ARE NEEDED IN REHABILITATION PROGRAMS, AND WHETHER PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN REHABILITATION PROGRAMS IS SUFFICIENT. A MAJORITY OF THE RESPONDENTS BELIEVED THAT THE FIVE PRESELECTED REHABILITATION PROGRAMS ARE SIGNIFICANT IN PREPARING INMATES FOR NORMATIVE COMMUNITY LIVING; HOWEVER, A LARGE NUMBER BELIEVED THAT MORE AND BETTER VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS ARE NEEDED. A MAJORITY OF THE RESPONDENTS WERE OF THE OPINION THAT REHABILITATION PROGRAMS DO TREAT PROBLEMS INDIVIDUALLY. THE COED INSTITUTION IS BELIEVED TO BE BENEFICIAL IN REHABILITATION IN THE OPINIONS OF A MAJORITY OF THE RESPONDENTS. A LARGE NUMBER OF THE RESPONDENTS BELIEVED THAT MORE PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IS NEEDED TO IMPROVE REHABILITATION PROGRAMS. SUPPORTING TABULAR DATA ARE PROVIDED.
