THIS REPORT PRESENTS STATISTICS ON CRIME IN NEBRASKA DURING 1978, BASED ON THE UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING PROGRAM CONDUCTED BY THE NEBRASKA COMMISSION ON LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE.
Abstract
THE NEBRASKA UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING PROGRAM WAS IMPLEMENTED IN 1971. PART I OFFENSES (HOMICIDE, RAPE, ROBBERY, ASSAULT, BURGLARY, LARCENY-THEFT, AND MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT) AND PART II OFFENSES, INDEX CRIMES (MURDER, MANSLAUGHTER, FORCIBLE RAPE, ROBBERY, FELONY ASSAULT, LARCENY-THEFT, AND MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT), CLEARANCES, CRIME RATES, AND CRIME FACTORS ARE REPORTED. FROM 1974 TO 1978, THE CRIME RATE PER 1,000 POPULATION INCREASED 2.4 PERCENT. INDEX OFFENSES INCREASED 3.8 PERCENT OVER 1974. A TOTAL OF 52,899 INDEX OFFENSES WERE REPORTED OR KNOWN TO LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES DURING 1978. VIOLENT CRIMES CONSTITUTED 5.6 PERCENT OF THE INDEX CRIMES AND LARCENY-THEFT MADE UP 66.3 PERCENT. JUST UNDER ONE-FOURTH OF THE INDEX OFFENSES WERE CLEARED. VIOLENT CRIMES HAD A CLEARANCE RATE OF 62.8 PERCENT, WHILE PROPERTY CRIMES 22.7 PERCENT CLEARANCE RATE. A TOTAL OF 46 MRUDERS AND MANSLAUGHTERS WERE REPORTED. THREE-QUARTERS OF THE MURDERS WERE COMMITTED BY A RELATIVE OR ACQUANITANCE OF THE VICTIM. RAPE VICTIMSWERE MOST LIKELY TO BE ATTACKED IN THEIR OWN HOMES. ABOUT 90 PERCENT OF THOSE ARRESTED FOR FELONY ASSAULTS WERE MALES. JUVENILES ACCOUNTED FOR 57.7 PERCENT OF ALL ARRESTS FOR MOTOR VEHCILE THEFT. ABOUT FOUR-FIFTHS OF THOSE ARRESTED FOR PART I AND PART II OFFENSES WERE MALES. THERE WERE 208 ASSAULTS ON LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS. FIGURES, EXTENSIVE TABLES, LAW ENFORCEMENT EMPLOYEE DATA, AND OFFENSE AND ARREST DATA FOR EACH COUNTY ARE PRESENTED. (CFW)
