TABLE PRODUCING LANGUAGE (TPL) IS A SET OF COMPUTER PROGRAMS WHICH PRODUCES PRINTED TABLES FROM MACHINE-READABLE DATA FILES.
Abstract
TPL CAN BE USED TO SELECT DATA FROM DISPLAY, COMPUTE NEW VARIABLES FROM OLD VALUES, AND TO FORMAT MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF STATISTICAL TABLES. TPL WAS WRITTEN BY THE BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS AND CONVERTED TO RUN UNDER THE MICHIGAN TERMINAL SYSTEM BY THE LEAA RESEARCH SUPPORT CENTER. EACH TPL STATEMENT, INCLUDING USE, TABLE, SELECT, DEFINE, COMPUTE, AND POST COMPUTE, IS MODELED, SHOWING FORMAT AND CONTENT, WITH EXAMPLES OF USE. THE PROCEDURES FOR GENERATING A TPL CODEBOOK DESCRIBING THE DATA FILES IN USE FOR THE PARTICULAR TABLE ARE EXPLAINED. THE VARIABLES USED TO SET UP THE TABLES ARE DEFINED, AND EXAMPLES SHOW THEIR USE. AN APPENDIX PRESENTS A SAMPLE CODEBOOK AND DATA FILE WITH THE RESULTANT TABLE.
