IN THIS FILM, PARENT AIDES SHARE MEMORIES OF THEIR FIRST CONTACT WITH THE FAMILIES THEY WERE SENT TO HELP. SOME PERSONAL EXPERIENCES, AND SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR TEACHING PARENTS HOW TO LOVE.
Abstract
PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT IN THE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT HAS RESULTED IN THE WORK OF PARENT AIDES WHO SERVE AS A RESOURCE FOR FAMILIES THAT NEED ADDITIONAL HELP IN PARENTING. THE AIDES DISCUSS SOME QUALITIES USEFUL IN WORKING WITH FAMILIES INCLUDING PATIENCE, HONESTY, BUILDING ON THE MOTHER'S STRENGTHS, AND SHOWING PARENTS HOW TO DO A PARTICULAR TASK, RATHER THAN DOING IT FOR THEM. IN ADDITION, THE AIDES TEACH YOUNG MOTHERS TO CUDDLE AND HUG BABIES, RATHER THAN TO KEEP THEM AT ARM'S LENGTH, AND SHOW THEM HOW TO PROVIDE FIRM BUT LOVING DISCIPLINE. FEELINGS OF FAILURE AND DISCOURAGEMENT ARE DISCUSSED, AS WELL AS THE IMPORTANCE OF LETTING FAMILIES KNOW THE LIMITS OF PARENT-AIDE GIVING.
