THE SECURITY DIRECTOR OF NEIMAN-MARCUS STORES PROVIDES ADVICE AND A SECURITY CHECKLIST FOR USE IN DESIGNING, BUILDING, AND OPENING NEW STORES.
Abstract
ALTHOUGH SECURITY PROBLEMS AT NEIMAN-MARCUS WERE ONCE CONFINED TO INNER CITY STORES, THEY ARE NOW FOUND IN SUBURBAN STORES AS WELL. TODAY, SECURITY MUST BE BUILT INTO THE STORE RATHER THAN ADDED ON AFTERWARDS. SECURITY PLANNERS MUST PARTICIPATE IN THE PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW STORE, REVIEW SECURITY SYSTEMS IN EXISTING STORES, AND BEGIN WORKING THROUGH A SECURITY CHECKLIST 18 MONTHS BEFORE THE STORE OPENS. THE PROCESS INVOLVES CHECKING STORE CONSTRUCTION PLANS FOR APPROVED SECURITY MEASURES 18 MONTHS BEFORE THE SCHEDULED OPENING, PLANNING ALL ALARM SYSTEMS AT 14 MONTHS, REVIEWING BIDS FOR ALARM SYSTEMS AT 12 MONTHS, AND THEREAFTER HIRING A SECURITY MANAGER, ORDERING EQUIPMENT, REVIEWING PERSONNEL NEEDS WITH STORE MANAGEMENT, AND CHECKING THE WHOLE SECURITY SYSTEM. CARE MUST BE TAKEN IN ARRANGING SPACE FOR EMPLOYEES LOCKERS; SECURITY MUST BE MAINTAINED AT EMPLOYEE ENTRANCES AND IN FITTING ROOMS, RESTROOMS, AND STOCKROOMS. IN ADDITION, BURGLAR-PROOF GLASS SHOULD BE INSTALLED IN OUTSIDE WINDOWS, JEWELRY COUNTERS LOCATED FAR FROM CROWDED AREAS, AND VIDEO CAMERAS PLACED PROMINENTLY. SECURITY MANAGEMENT SHOULD OBTAIN INFORMATION ABOUT LOCAL CONDITION AND GET TO KNOW LOCAL POLICE, ADVISE EMPLOYEES OF SECURITY PRECAUTIONS, AND MAINTAIN A HIGH-SECURITY PROFILE AT THE STORE'S OPENING FOR ITS DETERRENT EFFECT.
