THIS REPORT PRESENTS STATISTICS ON CHILDREN IN U.S. INSTITUTIONS IN 1966. IT IS BASED ON A NATIONAL SURVEY OF RESIDENTIAL CHILD CARE FACILITIES CONDUCTED BY THE CENTER FOR URBAN STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO.
Abstract
THE RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED UNDER A GRANT FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, EDUCATION, AND WELFARE. IN 1966, OVER 163,193 CHILDREN WERE LIVING IN 2,460 CHILDREN'S INSTITUTIONS, EXCLUDING INSTITUTIONS FOR MENTALLY RETARDED OR PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED. INCLUDED WERE CHILDREN IN MATERNITY HOMES FOR UNWED YOUNG MOTHERS, INFANT UNITS OF MATERNITY HOMES, TEMPORARY SHELTERS, INSTITUTIONS FOR DEPENDENT AND NEGLECTED CHILDREN, DETENTION FACILITIES, INSTITUTIONS FOR PREDELINQUENTS AND DELINQUENTS, RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT CENTERS, AND PSYCHIATRIC INPATIENT CHILDREN'S UNITS. ALMOST HALF OF THE CHILDREN WERE UNDER PUBLIC CARE. THE 72,000 CHILDREN IN FACILITIES FOR DEPENDENT AND NEGLECTED CHILDREN WERE THE LARGEST GROUP IN INSTITUTIONS. PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS PROVIDED CARE TO OVER 90 PERCENT OF ALL CHILDREN IN DETENTION AND TO 85 PERCENT TO 90 PERCENT OF YOUTH IN BOTH PSYCHIATRIC UNITS AND INSTITUTIONS FOR DELINQUENTS OR PREDELINQUENTS. THE NUMBERS OF CHILDREN IN INSTITUTIONS VARIED CONSIDERABLY FROM STATE TO STATE AND FROM REGION TO REGION. FOOTNOTES AND NINE TABLES ARE INCLUDED.
