FOUR RECENT CALIFORNIA LAWS COVERING AUTO REPAIRS, GARNISHMENT OF WAGES, INCREASED SETTLEMENT LIMIT IN SMALL CLAIMS COURT, AND SALES PURCHASE AGREEMENT CANCELLATIONS ARE DESCRIBED IN THIS FILM FOR CONSUMERS.
Abstract
INTENDED FOR AUDIENCES RANGING FROM JUNIOR HIGH THROUGH ADULT, THE FILM DRAMATIZES FOUR FAMILIAR CONSUMER PROBLEMS AND DESCRIBES HOW THE RECENT LAWS HELP THE CONSUMER IN EACH CASE. CONSUMERS WHO WANT THEIR CARS REPAIRED CAN NOW ASK FOR A STATEMENT IN WRITING AND CAN REFUSE TO PAY FOR ADDITIONAL REPAIRS UNLESS THEY ARE NOTIFIED IN ADVANCE. EMPLOYEES CAN FILE A CLAIM OF EXEMPTION WITH THE COUNTY MARSHALL IF THREATENED WITH WAGE GARNISHMENT, CANNOT HAVE MORE THAN 50 PERCENT OF THEIR WAGES GARNISHED, AND CANNOT BE FIRED FOR SUCH GARNISHMENT. CONSUMERS CAN ALSO HAVE CLAIMS OF UP TO $500 SETTLED IN SMALL CLAIMS COURT. IN ADDITION, IF THEY HAVE PURCHASED MERCHANDISE OVER $50, THEY CAN CANCEL WITHIN 3 DAYS. THE FILM EMPHASIZES THAT KNOWLEDGE OF CONSUMER PROTECTION LAWS IS IMPORTANT IF CONSUMERS ARE TO EXERCISE THEIR LEGAL RIGHTS.
