Abstract
EVENTS AND DISCLOSURES ARE DETAILED IN AN OBJECTIVE STYLE FROM THE FIRST REPORT OF THE WATERGATE BURGLARY THROUGH JOHN DEAN'S TESTIMONY BEFORE THE SENATE SELECT COMMITTEE THAT PRESIDENT NIXON HIMSELF HAD BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN THE COVERUP. EVENTS DESCRIBED INCLUDE LEGAL ACTIONS AGAINST THOSE ASSOCIATED WITH THE WATERGATE BURGLARY, LEADS SHOWING WHITE HOUSE INVOLVEMENT, THE SENATE AUTHORIZATION OF AN INVESTIGATION, WHITE HOUSE EFFORTS TO CONTROL THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO THE COMMITTEE AND INTERPRET EVENTS, AND THE TESTIMONY OF WITNESSES BEFORE THE ERVIN COMMITTEE. EVENTS INDIRECTLY RELATED TO WATERGATE ARE ALSO REPORTED, SUCH AS THE INDICTMENT OF MITCHELL AND STANS IN THE CASE OF ROBERT VESCO'S ILLEGAL CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS AND THE DISMISSAL OF CHARGES AGAINST DANIEL ELLSBERG. A CHRONOLOGY OF 'WATERGATE' EVENTS IS LISTED AND EACH BRIEFLY DESCRIBED, FROM THE BURGLARY OF ELLSBERG'S PSYCHIATRIST'S OFFICE ON SEPTEMBER 4, 1971, TO JULIE EISENHOWER'S STATEMENT ON JULY 3, 1973 THAT HER FATHER HAD CONSIDERED RESIGNING AS EARLY AS MAY OF THAT YEAR. THE NEWSPAPER EDITORIAL COMMENTS ON THE EVENTS REPORTED ARE PRESENTED WITHOUT COMMENT OR EDITING. AN INDEX IS INCLUDED. FOR REMAINING VOLUMES, SEE NCJ 69005-6. (RCB)
